東高月山　シャクナゲとシキビの稜線（愛媛県宇和島市・愛媛県北宇和郡鬼北町）標高1181m

高月山から東高月山へ。
まずは、高月山を一気に下っていきます。
ここもシャクナゲの群生地！
たくさんのシャクナゲの花に囲まれて下りていきます。
下ったあとは、ほぼ横歩きです。

木々の間を進んでいくと、しきびの香りがしてきます。
（本来は「しきみ」だそうです。関西地方の訛なのだとか…）
「お線香の香りがする！」と言われて、イメージと香りがセットになるよなぁと思っていたのですが、なんとなんと、高野山大師堂さんに「しきみ高野霊香」という樒の香りのお線香（樒線香）がありました。
最近は樒の香りはすくなくなってきたのだとか。

ここから杉の木立とシャクナゲの道を進んでいきます。
日当たりがよくないためか、登山道側にはシャクナゲの花は少なかったです。
日当たりの良い斜面側には、たくさん咲いていました。

シャクナゲの道を抜けていくと、東高月山に到着です。
ピークというよりは、尾根道の途中にある感じです。
山頂標識と三角点が出迎えてくれます。

さて、郭公岳に向かいます。

From Mt. Takatsuki to Mt. Higashi-Takatsuki.
First, we’ll descend Mt. Takatsuki in one go.
This area is also home to a rhododendron grove!
We make our way down surrounded by countless rhododendron blossoms.
After the descent, it’s mostly a level walk.

As we make our way through the trees, the scent of shikibi begins to waft through the air.
(Apparently, the correct name is “shikimi.” I’ve heard this is a dialectal variation in the Kansai region…)
Someone remarked, “It smells like incense!” and I thought to myself, “That scent really does go hand in hand with the image,” but lo and behold, at Koyasan Daishido, they had incense called “Shikimi Koya Reiko” that actually smells like shikimi (shikimi incense).
I’ve heard that the scent of shikimi has become quite rare these days.

From here, I continued along a path through a grove of cedar trees and rhododendrons.
Perhaps because of the lack of sunlight, there were few rhododendron flowers on the trail side.
On the sunny slope, however, they were blooming in abundance.

After passing through the rhododendron-lined path, I arrived at Mt. Higashi-Takatsuki.
It feels more like a spot along a ridge trail than an actual peak.
A summit marker and a triangulation point greeted me.

Now, I’m heading toward Mt. Kakko.
